We have had to temporarily disable certain features as Google has started charging us a lot for using its Google Maps API. For now, we can only show the static map preview but hope to re-enable this feature soon. For more information see our Help page and sorry for the inconvenience!
As of July 1st, 2019, Google has decided to charge us for the usage of its Google Maps API. This has dramatically affected Snazzy Maps to the point that we're unsure if we'll be able to keep the site up.
At the start of the month, our charges totaled more than $300 per day for a bill of more than $10,000 per month.
This is clearly unsustainable for us as we have always offered our features for free to help designers and developers work with Google Maps. As a result, we have had to start cutting out features that are accumulating the most cost for us, including removing:
With the above changes, we were able to cut our costs by 70%. Unfortunately, this is still not enough and we are evaluating additional changes such as temporarily disabling new style creation. We are also evaluating monetization options without putting up paywalls and restricting access.
We know these changes negatively affect the user experience and overall usefulness of Snazzy Maps. It's disappointing but we are working hard to keep the site alive for our users.
